Getting a windshield repair could save your life

So you are driving down the road, you glance over and you notice that your windshield has a crack. It really isn’t that big but then again it isn’t that small. You don’t want to spend money on a windshield repair, so you choose to just ignore the crack and hope it doesn’t get worse. However, ignoring it may not be the safest thing; and if you are in a crash, that crack could harm or kill you.

What a windshield does

To most people, the purpose of a windshield is to keep things out. Things like the weather, wind and rocks. Although it is important to keep things out, it is not as important as what a windshield keeps in – you. When you get in a crash your car has airbags and other devices to keep you safe. However, some of these safety devices rely on the windshield to function properly. Air bags, for instance, rely on the windshield for proper deployment, and the support columns on both sides of your windshield, which are intended to keep the roof from caving in when the vehicle rolls, rely on the windshield to keep them from buckling.  As high tech as these safety devices are, there is a very low tech function that windshields perform as well. They keep you from being ejected from the front of the vehicle. If you avoided getting a windshield repair, your windshield isn’t as strong and might not keep you in the car.

Regulations

In order for a windshield to be sold in the United States it must pass strict standards. It has to be strong enough to keep you safe during a crash, keep your roof supported, help with car support columns and be strong enough to support the passenger compartment.
